The soundtrack is absolutely incredible. If Vampyr as a game is underrated, then it's an absolute travesty that the soundtrack to this game is not at the forefront of some music in video games award ceremony. The moody, noir style disease-stricken London of post WWI is expertly crafted. It all comes together to create such a unique, powerful ATMOSPHERE that is just hard to describe.The game perhaps isn't quite for everyone which is where the mixed reviews come in. It requires a lot of investment from the player in order to get the most out of it, it's not something to blindly rush through to get to the ending. Likewise, the combat is far from the most polished system, but it's also far from the main focus, which is the brilliant writing and narrative, coupled with a unique and borderline innovative video game concept of having the choice to kill or spare every single minor or and major NPC in the game.

Framerate is surprisingly relatively smooth and consistent compared to the console releases. The only complaints I have are the inability to reverse the A/B button (you were able to do this in (S)Witcher 3) and the game will pause sometimes in the middle of gameplay to load for a couple seconds with a brief loading screen. This was at seemingly random times and a bit annoying. Not an issue for me, but some people might find it hard to read the text on handheld, especially switch lite. There's an option to increase subtitle font size but no menu/notes/books/HUD etc.. Hopefully these things can be patched if enough people have issues with them. Finally, at release this game is kind of expensive ($50 at release) since it has been out on other systems for a year now ($14 on sale on PS store). But that's just nintendo tax and also probably the cost of porting it. Luckily switch games have a solid resale value and don't depreciate a lot.

I still prevailed, forcing my Jonathan into blood abstinence through the very end and I do mean MY Jonathan. The game’s main character is by far my favourite thing in the game. Jonathan Reid truly felt like he belonged in this world, with a rich backstory, flaws and traits, political opinions and interest but giving me enough dialogue choices to tailor them to my own preferences. All the more surprised I was when I saw other people’s gameplay and how their Jonathan’s differed from mine completely but somehow had the same level of depth.The NPC’s and their connection towards each other- is fun to explore and well implemented in the game. Aside from the awkwardly paced romance that the game sadly forces on the main character. The doctor-playing part of the game was a fun addition but nothing more than that.The main story was absolutely amazing. It does everything right by introducing the fantasy aspects so slow and always tied into real-world occurrences that they almost start to sound believable. The writers have clearly done their research as I found myself looking through Wikipedia pages of the historical figures and events mentioned in the game during the (unbearably long) loading screens.The developers made the most out of their rather limited supply of 3D assets so different areas all had their own feel to it.But even with all the praise, there is just no way around mentioning the combat system.Very few different types of enemies, slow character responses, horrible camera movements, the ‘best’ weapon can be found within the first hour of playing, the respawn mechanics are horrendously punishing, especially in closed-off areas with boss fights. Consumables do not respawn so if you have used them in your first attempt, died and came back…well…. Good luck.I can’t bring myself to dislike this game however. It’s doing something new, and it is excelling at it.it’s one of those titles that I can talk about even with friends who aren’t enthusiastic about videogames because it just has that much depth to offer. If only all aspects were as polished as the NPC system and the story so it could appeal to a brought mass giving Vampyr the popularity it deserves. But at least this way the developers can concentrate fully on tailoring it to a specific audience – of which I happily admit to be a part of.

Don't buy this port until the performance issues are addressed. I can't recommend it as it currently exists to fans of the game, or those with only a Switch in the house: I can't recommend this port to anyone. Skip Vampyr for the Switch; there are better ways to play a bloodsucker out there.

Dontnod Entertainment offers us an interesting title that has good ideas and atmosphere, but is blurred in the fog of London due to its performance issues and its simple and repetitive combat system. However, its interesting story makes it enjoyable, so it is highly recommended for any vampire fan.

Like many games ported to Switch, Vampyr is perfectly adequate on the format, but nothing more. If you don’t own a PS4, Xbox One or a PC up to the task and have been itching to play the game, by all means pick it up; you’ll get a lot of enjoyment out of it. The Switch version is the weakest available though, and since Vampyr has such a wonderfully haunting atmosphere, the downgrades and performance issues do detract from it somewhat. Vampyr is still a good game on Switch, but it’s not the best way to play it.

It has an interesting story and well written characters that kept me playing through. Even with some less than stellar battles. The setting is fantastic and is quick to draw you in with great atmosphere.

Without a majority of the characters, the time between the major story beats would be particularly dull without anyone to talk to or side quests to complete. To take the evil path and embrace the vampire side of Jonathan, is to kill what life there is in Vampyr. Although it is important that there are consequences to your actions, some of which do have an immediate impact to the world, there isn’t enough to balance it out and make being evil fun or interesting.

The atmosphere is excellent and the story is overall very good. The voice acting is definitely a highlight as is the soundtrack and both are well done. Those are the biggest positives.The negatives are almost overwhelming. On the original Xbox One it has technical issues - below average graphics, HUGE loading issues that break immersion and can make you want to scream (when it hits a loading pause during a random piece of combat you know it has issues - especially when it takes 30 seconds to resolve) and it will have bugs that break the game during dialogue and audio glitches that disrupt conversation and even create long loss of voice during some scenes. The combat gets in the way of the game - it's okay, but not too challenging and you can cheese it in places easily. If you do die it is random as to what resources you will respawn with - sometimes it has you consume all you used and other times you respawn with everything you started with before dying. But the greatest sin is the placement of written materials in places on certain levels that are long and you read to open dialogue. Then when you have the dialogue it GOES OVER EVERYTHING YOU JUST READ.This game could have been much better paced. The only thing that made me stick with it until the end is the story appealed to me, but as a game it disappointed me. The combat was okay, but realistically should have been better developed or removed. Vampyr could have been a great game, instead it was released as an okay to fairly good game.

I want to like this game, I really do. But it's holding me back from doing so. Reading into it, I find a lot of near-depth, but nothing that the game actually employs has much depth to it. There are a ton of amazing aspects that boost the game, but its larger ambitions lies just outside the reach of its execution. But it is worth a try, and an admirable achievement. In truth, I think this game is more a 7.8, but I feel the current rating it has adequately describes its qualities, while acknowledging its flaws.

Don’t Nod’s latest has all the ingredients of a fantastic RPG, but – unfortunately – some of its most alluring concepts are only superficially explored, and yet others are applied inconsistently throughout. The protagonist never seemed to noticeably darken, despite his evil deeds – nor did the public perception of him; and, worse, though Vampyr notionally permits a high degree of player choice, its narrative neglects and ignores these choices as the lacklustre story unfolds. This – for a roleplaying game – is a cardinal sin, and results in a morass of incongruous moments. Vampyr is a game you won’t be sorry to have played, though it might leave a bitter taste in your mouth; the taste of missed opportunity.

The gameplay inconveniences are easier to overlook than the rush of endgame exposition, but both of these issues are slightly outweighed by the narrative hits, which come along more frequently than the game’s misses.

Vampyr is the vampire story that I’ve waited for many, many years for. As a fan of Anne Rice and the deeper tales around vampires – and as a fan of stories that are focused on moral conflict and consequence, Dontnod have crafted something that feels custom-designed for me.

Thankfully Vampyr ticks a lot of boxes for me and even though it has a few shortcomings I was able to look past these because for me they got the important aspects and mechanics spot on. Something I was hoping this game had was a decent story, and thankfully the story was excellent. I was hooked from start to finish because the story had a dark and mysterious vibe that resonated throughout and the characters that were in the story were very intriguing to say the least. I was also very impressed with the world in which the game takes place because exploring this fantastic world never became dull. The main reason why it didn’t become dull is because there was always something to do and the side quests were always fun to undertake, which is great. The gameplay on the whole has a lot of variety going for it and the investigating mechanics have been very well done. Investigating never seemed to get boring and it was always a pleasure making the choices you have to make in the game because these choices actually matter in the grand scheme of things. Whilst I really enjoyed making the choices I had to make it would’ve been nice to have had a little bit more freedom with them, but thankfully this is only a small gripe. My biggest gripe with this game came in the form of the compass that guides you to where you’re meant to go. The problem is that the compass never guided me to where I had to go correctly and this did make me become frustrated from time to time. Despite my frustration with this aspect of the game I was however able to look past it quite easily thanks to the game’s excellent combat. The combat in the game was fun to say the least and the best thing is that it did more than enough to satisfy me. If you’re wondering about the presentation side of the game then you’ll be pleased to know that they get quite a bit right, but it’s not all plain sailing. Visually the game can look quite ugly at times and there is definitely a distinct lack of polish here, especially when it comes to the technichal side of the game. The sound design though has been done extremely well and the very good voice acting combined with the tense atmosphere makes things very immersive, which is great. At the end of the day as far as AA game’s go Vampyr is a very good addition and even though it doesn’t have all the glamour a AAA title has I thoroughly recommend that you add this title to your game library.

It’s a game that truly puts the narrative power into the hands of the player, which ultimately results in a deep and immersive journey through a dark and compelling plot.

After the touching emotional drama of Dontnod’s previous game – the coming-of-age adventure Life Is Strange – Vampyr’s ambitious but awkward chin-stroking is disappointingly inert, while its failure to reconcile its ethical hand-wringing with its gratuitous combat leaves it as conflicted as its undead protagonist.

Vampyr is at its best when players are digging into the lives of London’s citizens and choosing who to kill or who to spare, so it’s unfortunate that the developers felt the need to shoehorn in uninspired combat and frustrating exploration elements. Beneath these problems is a classic vampire story that leverages its grim visuals and moody soundtrack to create an engrossing atmosphere, but the many technical issues still make Vampyr hard to recommend, even for diehard fans of the genre.

Vampyr has a great universe, a great narrative and a great concept, although the execution is a little bit flawed. We’ve enjoyed it even with its flaws so, if you are just a little bit interested in the story and the setting, give it a try.

The story is rather focused on the city of London, devastated by an epidemic.The Vampyr universe is greatly expanded in terms of mythologies and cultures, creating space for various types of organizations and groups in the game, such as secret vampire societies, shady sororities, hunter groups, and high-class vampire societies that govern the region, as well as other things that you discover throughout the game. The game is full of characters, each with its own characteristics and missions. Although Vampyr's promotional images that show cities full of people moving and interacting are a deceptive advertisement, you really feel inside a living and functional place.In the game you will need to know how to divide your bloodthirsty vampire side with your renowned doctor side, taking advantage to feed on these characters or helping them and improving the city. Your choices will affect the direction of the story of the game, as well as the direction of each city district and the destination of the characters that are there. As the game progresses (the main story takes 15 to 20 hours to be completed) the story is getting as intense as the prologue but leaving more room for choices rather than demotivating linearity.A big problem of the game is to force you to have a certain personality and affection for a certain character, something that I as a player did not understand where it came from and I could not relate because of the choices I made in the game. The DONTNOD Entertainment team had done something similar and forced on Life is Strange and it seems they made the same mistake.GameplayAs Vampyr it is an RPG of choices, open world and full of combat, I will divide this session into two parts: Choices and Combat.In terms of choices, the game has more effect on your actions than on dialog options. While it's amazing that you can just go on an NPC that would normally give you several missions, interact with the world around you and simply choose to kill him to quench your blood thirst (and gain a lot, but a lot XP with it), the dialogue options are almost always limiting and in the whole game only in 3 or 4 moments you will make big decisions because of these options. In some moments where you think you need to make a decision of extreme importance in the game, he chooses the destiny for you as well.Whenever you sleep, that is when you can evolve, the game shows the results of your actions in each district, showing if the district has become healthier or gone into chaos. Depending on the level of the district, certain NPCs will act differently and may improve the status of some and in worse cases, leading to the death of others.Already in combat, the game is sensational in every way. The combat is very similar to Witcher 2 and 3 (this is not going to be the last time I'll use Witcher for reference in this review), except that instead of being a hunter with equipment prepared to defeat a certain monster, you are the monster needing to watch out for hunters who know all their weaknesses. The game does not have a lot of variety of enemies (inferior vampires, hunters, monsters and vampires of high level), but knows to vary in the abilities that each one of them has as you get stronger in the game, which is great since, in a universe only of vampires, to escape of the pattern with enemies only to satisfy the will of the combat player, would be a negative point in the whole lore of the game.Hunters will only start with swords, torches and silver pistols, but as you progress through the game, the same hunters will start to carry crosses, garlic, higher precision rifles and even flamethrowers! The same goes for lower vampires, who will be stronger and have some new abilities. High level vampires find you only in some areas of the game and will start to use more skills similar to yours.Another thing the game has in common with Witcher 3 (not that this is Witcher 3's original or inspired by it), is the Witcher's sense. In the case of Vampyr, vampire sense. And it works the same way and is used by the game in the same way, you change your you change your vision to follow traces of blood or see enemies hidden by the map. Unlike the Witching sense, the vampire sense is not so charged to be used in so many missions and can be used more strategically by the player to avoid fighting or locating things hidden by the map.ConcludingVampyr is a very, very good game.

Vampyr is both amazing and irritating. Yes, the fighting system is very forgettable and the level-design is frustrating, but the world and the NPC are so great you’ll have a good time anyway.

What’s struck me most about my time with Vampyr is that it manages to turn you into a predator through its mechanics as much as it does with its storytelling. It does collapse under its own weight by the end, but the fact that it so effectively seduces you, almost trance-like, into roleplaying a villain makes it worth biting into.

Vampyr compromises its themes that emphasize the value of life by shackling itself to traditional, tedious game design that finds the good Dr. Reid slicing through hordes of faceless folks in hopes of upgrading his hacksaw.
