It's true the monkeys can be a chore using at first, but if you're patient enough you'll get the hang of it. The game is also quite long, over 50 + hours for a good roundup. If you like Stardew valley but looking for something a bit more challenging this game is a must.

Don’t let the title fool you. For something called The Survivalists, the game’s survival-related mechanics are shockingly lenient. The only aspect you need to pay constant attention to is hunger, but there’s plenty of food. Low overall difficulty level doesn’t have to be a flaw though. If Don’t Starve Together is too stressful for you and your friends, The Survivalists might be a great choice for co-op.

I played the whole night, and even read tips and tricks on how to make it more interesting but, nah.The monkeys are so hard to control, for example, I assign them a task of attacking enemies, I wasn't even near an enemy but one of them went astray and attacked a boar. I wasn't paying attention to it then I discovered he got killed by the wild boar. Mind you, I was travelling to another island. I didn't have the right equipment or gear to teach him again how to fight enemies so the rest of the trip, I had to go find him while he wandered around, just to bring him back to my base and teach him how to fight again.I don't get it how we can't just assign tasks to him when we've already taught them once. I wrongly selected a monkey to teach and just had to wait until the time is over so that the other monkey won't lose his current assigned role. I don't get it. The monkeys could be a really fun part of the game, I find it really enjoyable having to travel to other islands and meeting other monkeys. But then I realise, having more than 4 in the same place is a headache.We can't have the same monkey collecting resource for the cooking pot/ crafting bench for building. So one monkey was busy collecting what the crafting bench made and the other wanted that for building blueprints so it was havoc. I had no clue how to make it even more systematic.I couldn't even reach the 24 hour mark of playing this game. Don't get me wrong, I love open-world game the best. It's my fav concept of a game ever and The Survivalists seem like going in the right direction, but somehow crashed. I was about to rate the game 0 but realised I did enjoy some parts of it so a score of 1 is sufficient.

It’s a lot of fun with friends, but it lacks something in single-player. I definitely recommend picking this up if you’re looking for something new to play in co-op or if you want to try out the survival genre in general. However, it lacks some of the satisfaction of other games in the genre. That being said, the monkey system is incredibly cool and the game is almost worth playing for that alone.

In an industry that has shifted from being “kid-friendly” to “adult-focused,” it’s imperative to remember that some games simply won’t work for the more aged gamers (30 is aged, right?). That’s not to say The Survivalists won’t resonate with adults — if this is your cup of banana smoothie, by all means — but it seems to be trying to speak with a younger audience. If you’re lamenting that school has started and you can’t devote as many hours to Minecraft with friends as you’d like, you’re probably going to love The Survivalists.

The Survivalists is just an OK game that you will probably enjoy for a few weeks and then put away and never play again. It’s a shame because it has the foundations of something excellent, but it’s all just too simple and tedious. If the mechanics were better, the crafting was easier, there were more things to build, more types of mobs, and some clear objective like escaping the island or fighting a series of mini-bosses, we wouldn’t be talking about a little throw-away game, here; we’d be talking about a true hidden gem.

The Survivalists is the latest in a crowded genre. Bright visuals can't hide that it is a fairly light experience at present, but there is some enjoyment to be had if you can look past the slightly uncomfortable sub-text of its central mechanic.

Well, that’s a disappointment: After The Escapists 1+2, we were looking forward to the next game set in the same universe. The Survivalists, however, can’t hold a candle to its predecessors. The gameplay is broken in more ways than we can count, there are plenty of design flaws which makes you wonder how anybody couldn’t have seen how irritating they are and nevertheless, the game is way too short and way too easy. You can also befriend the local monkeys and they can be convinced to help you complete some of your tasks. Surviving the islands alone can be quite the task, and like most sandbox games you'll find yourself getting into routines that you will repeat a lot. You can also bring up to 3 friends to join you, The more hands the more you can get done, but the more mouths to feed too! The Islands have just as many dangers as wonders and will always keep you on your toes. Team17 have created a relaxing and fun survival game with a great atmosphere. Fans of Survival Sandbox games will be delighted with this game, and should find countless hours of entertainment.

so, i've ignored the bad steam reviews, the negative comments, and wanted to give this game a try because it has "survival" in its name. afterso, i've ignored the bad steam reviews, the negative comments, and wanted to give this game a try because it has "survival" in its name. after more than twenty hours, i have to say that ... it is one of the worst survival and crafting games in my recent memory. yes, highly subjective, i know. i've been wondering what the biggest issue is, and i think that it is not so much the lack of content, though this is a problem, but actually the bad ui and especially the horrible monkey npc controls and mechanics. the more i think about it, the more i believe that the survivalists has a game design issue that will be not solved easily, or any time. i mean, sometimes a bad game remains a bad game, no matter what you do. the survivalists could become in time such a bad game design example.

I came into The Survivalists with high hopes, being such a fan of The Escapists. Sadly I came away from my time with it underwhelmed. There’s certainly fun to be had, and the feel of Escapists is here is parts, but some of the elements, such as the lack of storage space when out exploring, kept bringing my experience further down the longer I played. Here’s hoping Team 17 can bring me back in with the eventual (please) Escapists 3.

Some will get a lot out of The Survivalists, and we'd find it difficult to argue that it isn't fun – but your mileage will seriously vary on how quickly you burn out on its lackadaisical approach to the danger that really defines the survival genre. As an entry-level take on the principles it's pretty good, but even the least experienced survivor will reach endgame gear quickly and find there's just not a whole lot left to do. Updates could (and hopefully will) mitigate this issue, but The Survivalists – as it is now – feels a little... well... deserted.

The Survivalists has a lot of potential and it’s got a strong framework in place to evolve beyond its current iteration thanks to its tone, art style, and the unique feel of some gameplay elements. At the moment however the game is a little bit thin on the ground content-wise, and this is worth bearing in mind for those expecting a title they can pour plenty of hours into. This is no doubt going to be expanded over time, but it’s worth bearing in mind for those expecting a particularly deep experience – and those who do pick it up may want to take their time with it.

Not sure why these hyper critical users are scoring it at 0 and 1, etc. when it's really not bad at all. I haven't run into any bugs and it's par for the course as far as these games go. I was going to rate it at 7 but I feel this overall rating needs help so I gave it an 8... Let us know how YOU like it.

After 2-3 h you are done with the game. For a survival game, the game is not challenging at any time, except when the UI is not doing what you expect it to do. So, for an Early Access it would be a good base but for a full release? A disaster. I've checked the credits. It's a team of 30-40 people. How did such a big team miss so many points? What was the UI lead and the producer doing? This should not have happened. And it is confusing how many game magazines rated this game so high. It must have been journalists who do not care about survival games.

The Survivalists is a calm and serene survival game and monkey butler training broken up by spurts of risky combat and dungeon crawling with your trained monkey attack squad. If it wasn't for a few awkward design decisions it'd be fantastic, but it's still a good survival game that you can tackle with friends online.

The Survivalists on Xbox One is a very enjoyable experience. Its gameplay feels a bit like Don’t Starve, and its monkey system a bit like Factorio. But above all else, its charm and general aesthetic is all its own.

The Survivalists is a fun survival sandbox which can be played both as an arcade adventure, hunting for every treasure and secret hidden around the island, and with a more casual approach by trying to just build some kind of boat and leave. Plenty of situations to face, a huge amount of structures, artifacts and recipes to unlock and experiment with. Each run will be an unique adventure. Monkey training is the icing on the cake. Pretty, fast and responsive, it will keep you in front of the screen for a long time.

Team17 have done it again with another endearingly designed, vastly comprehensive fun experience. The Survivalists is one of the best crafting games that I have played and one of my favourite games of the year.
