This will more than likely be my skateboarding game until Skate 4 comes out.

Great game a little overpriced right now though. Gameplay is very realistic and very smooth. Can't do darkslides though but if you use mods you can.

As a 34-year-old who got his first skateboard at age 5, spent countless hours mastering tricks on the street, traversing schoolyards, and even in the basement of my home during the chilly and often snow-filled winters of Southern Ontario(Canada), and spending the ensuing three decades immersing myself in skateboarding and skateboard culture the one thing about Skater XL that it does get absolutely perfect is the often demoralizing(and eventually incredibly gratifying) grind that learning to skate truly is. Beyond that frustratingly realistic aspect, Skater XL fails at pretty much everything else that a game should be.I've always been of the belief that video games should be "fun". Personal definitions of "fun" notwithstanding I truly believe that one of the most important traits of a fun video game is that it can be booted up and played with even a small level of success. Not feeling totally overwhelmed or in the case of Skater XL entirely hopeless from the get-go is imperative to the enjoyment of a video game. A game with zero story, goals, or rewards for your "achievements" is hardly conducive to creating a fun atmosphere. Add to the fact that aside from a sometimes beautiful rendering of Los Angeles this game is a barren wasteland only populated by you and you alone. This creates a joyless, soulless, lifeless slog of an experience that feels massively disconnected from the reality it's hoping to simulate.In a year where there has been a significant forward movement in the skateboarding video game subgenre's "brand name" franchises. From EA's announcement of the long-awaited next installment of the fan favourite Skate franchise to the release of the passionate, faithfully recreated, rebuilt, and rematsered version of THPS(Tony Hawk's Pro Skater) the "grandaddy" of skateboarding video game franchises. With the latter acting as a return to form of sorts for the once considered "dead" franchise and the former acting as a beacon of hope for the future of the genre Skater XL was always going to be caught in a tough position and likely get lost in the shuffle. Unfortunately, that's where it probably belongs with it's less than appealing control scheme and astounding lack of depth. Skater XL is ultimately a game that will appeal to a very specific audience and it may actually satisfy them to some extent. Unless you are the most ardent of skateboard enthusiasts who during the Global Health Emergency really miss the struggle of actually skateboarding or are someone who has always wanted to skateboard but didn't want to endure the cuts, bruises, broken bones, and requisite trips to the Emergency Room and would rather settle for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Skater XL likely isn't going to be your cup of tea. Take it from someone who has put in the time to actually skateboard this game is not worth the trouble of "learning" how to "realistically" skateboard with your thumbs.

There is a solid fundament in Skater XL, and there is a hit of a potentially formidable skating sand box. But there is a heavy layer of polish that needs to be applied before the game is noteworthy.

If there's one thing Skater XL excels at, it's that it has a great foundation that shows Easy Day Studios knows how to make quality skateboarding mechanics. Unfortunately, the rest of the experience isn't quite there yet. The uninspired levels, barebones features, and overall unfinished-feeling state makes its 1.0 release look like it's still in Early Access. Its trick system deserves more, and with time, it could grow into a great experience. As it is now, Skater XL lacks spots worth conquering and fails to entice past this initial bail.

While there will be a core audience that enjoys mastering the footwork needed to pull off the different tricks, for most people that will not be enough to keep them playing for long.

There’s way too little content in Skater XL and a lot of missing things like NPCs which make it seem like the game never got out of early-access. Playing it, however, feels great. Let’s just hope that the developers update the game with a lot more stuff than it currently has.

Skater XL is, simply put, an unfinished product. It's a Skateboarding Simulation Game without the game. A barebones five developer-created maps and three user-created maps have no path, purpose or direction with just a handful of 'challenges' that are identical to tutorials. The skateboarding itself is great, the tricks satisfying to perform and a joy to pull off, particularly due to the control scheme. Will you enjoy it? Possibly, if you're happy making your own fun and you like skateboarding. If you expect a video game, you're going to be sorely disappointed.

Once you overcome Skater XL’s learning curve there’s some fun board-based entertainment to be had here. But this is a lightweight package with subpar presentation, and unless you’re so deep into skater culture that you absolutely need a simulation for your PS4, we’d recommend either waiting for this to be updated – or pre-ordering Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 instead.

Skater XL tickles the same part of my brain as my favorite racing sims. It provides a compelling sandbox with enough depth that it makes me want to do a difficult thing well. It’s simultaneously relaxing. You can fall on your face 500 times, but there are zero consequences for any of it. No one’s keeping score, not of points or broken bones. In troubled times, a low stakes challenge can be a welcome one.

I definitely think Skater XL is worth checking out, more so on the PC for the mod side of things than the console version at the moment. But if you’re not opposed to challenging yourself and seeking out your own fun with a responsive, unique physics-based control system, then I think you’ll still get some enjoyment with the current release of the game. Ideally, future updates will flesh out the experience even more, and based on the early access process prior to release, it does seem as if developer Easy Day Studios is committed to Skater XL for the long haul.

Fresh out of Steam Early Access, Skater XL attempts to resurrect the once-popular skateboard game genre through the use of a creative, intuitive control scheme. The core skating action is good, but the game still has too many rough patches.

Skater XL is a strong proof of concept but it’s currently incomplete. It has successfully created a physics-based control system that is both complex and rewarding. This will appeal to skaters as it’s the closest that video games have got to simulating the sport, however, Easy Days Studios has failed to gamify the experience. With more objectives, a story, voice acting and various modes, this could have been the skating title that gamers have been waiting for. Although post-launch content has been promised, many may have bailed before then.

Skater XL is a good attempt to recover this genre, but this is it, an attempt. It tries to put some realism in the gameplay, but isn't enough. The lack of content and game modes, the insufficient graphic quality, play against it. Maybe, for these people who wants something now, could be enough, but it's far from being a game that these people deserve.

Skater XL has a great foundation to build upon, but right now that’s all that it is. While we expect further updates to bring more content to the game, we can only recommend it to those who need a new skateboarding now and cannot wait.

For those willing to put in the time and effort (along with any of the glitches), Skater XL is a fun experience that skateboarding fans can enjoy - a statement that is even truer for those who also happen to be content creators, as some players out there are already putting together some pretty slick skate video-quality clips… likely after having plenty of their own Kerry Getz moments left on the cutting room floor.

The most that this game, with this structure, could reach is to become a lobby for you to walk while participating in a party with friends, but not even that because the game does not have multiplayer. A great idea executed in a mediocre way. Not even 50% of the amount charged.

The mechanics of this game were designed with realism in mind and is truly satisfying to master.It is fair to say that this game is lacking content however this is no different to skating the same local skatepark years on out. The fun is in the mechanics and gameplay as it is in real life with learning how to skate. The PS4 version requires a couple bug fixes and additional content would be a welcome addition. The fact that they’re allowing community made maps is class and continuing to work with the community is where this game has the potential to the best skateboarding game on consoles. It’s good to see skateboarding games make a return to the industry!

The physics are ok being able to just let the board rotate under your feet while you drop from 10 meters high is pretty satisfying but a bit unrealistic.The graphics are nothing to rave about they do their job for the most part but you won't be taking any screen-shots of the environment for their beauty.To conclude the game had a lot of potential but it just didn't deliver, lack of content and sloppy controls are it biggest faults.

What Skater XL does well is make you obsess over an 8-set of stairs, or return again and again to a simple curb. You will keep going back to line up the perfect angle, the exact spot to crouch into an ollie, tre flip and land a crooked grind. That’s great, that’s street skating in its essence, and it’s an achievement to capture that. But outside of that microcosm, as soon as you pan out, it steps on its own shoelaces and stumbles into a bush.

You would expect a small indie studio to have more passion for a project, but that isn’t the case, as this extremely incomplete game is being sold as full, at full price. If Fallout 76 and No Man Sky has a baby. This would be that child. Buy this game a year from now when most of the problems are hopefully fixed. Do not buy this game now. You would do better to wait. This game has a great idea, that’s executed terribly and lazily.

First representative of a lost genre in years, Skater XL will clearly disappoint those who hopes for dense content. Clearly focused on its core simulation mechanics, the game offers a true experience of what skating might feel, but lacks on every other level, with very few stages, a meagre soundtrack and many technical flaws.

To see a small studio like Easy Day Studios create something that is not only reminiscent of the games that clearly influenced them, but overall improves on what its predecessors did, is heartening. Sure, it has its fair share of flaws, but none of them take away from how much fun I’ve had. Skater XL has successfully brought back the skateboarding genre, and I am eager to see how Easy Day Studios supports the game moving forward.
