The only thing worthy of praise in Riot is the idea itself, but, as every sober-minded revolutionary knows, you won’t get far with just an idea.

Riot: Civil Unrest has the look and feel a good RTS with entertaining yet challenging gameplay sections, but it all feels a bit weird when considering a) these sections are based on real events, and b) that the gameplay is fun and entertaining, but really only when you play as the protesters.

RIOT – Civil Unrest sets out to show a side of riots you may not think of, and does so perfectly fine in an unbiased way based on real life protests. Riots are chaotic and unpredictable, and it’s no different here. It’s a shame that the controls aren’t very controller friendly, nor any subtle learning curve, as I probably would have enjoyed my time with it more if I knew what I was doing, how it was going to affect the outcome or even what the repercussions will be. But maybe that’s what RIOT does right, simply throwing you into the fray and letting the chaos ensue, though it almost always ended in a bloodbath for myself.

RIOT: Civil Unrest is a protest simulator, between the NO TAV movement, Indignados e Tahrir square, but it is also a very poor RTS.

The strategy elements in the game have quite a lot of depth to them and it was nice being able to play as a rioter and as a police officer. Some of the different mechanics in the game are pretty unique which means it’s unlike any other game I’ve played before. I found the controls that have been implemented to not be as smooth as they should’ve been and they did frustrate me from time to time. There isn’t a tutorial and this means that you struggle to do anything right at the start, and lose a lot thru trial and error. The game suffers with a few technical issues every now and then and these do hold the game back and make it less immersive. The gameplay can become repetitive if played for long periods you do start to slowly lose some interest in the end. There seems to be protests every day in the news. I’m not the most political person, and I don't follow the news closely. At its core this game is basically about rioting and it offers you the chance to not only be a rioter but it also offers you the chance to be a police officer as well. Of course then this means that there is a great deal of strategy involved and thankfully on the whole the strategy elements have been done well. There aren’t many more good points to list because as you progress you start to find small problems. One of the problems are the controls which feel finnicky for the most part and you never feel completely in control of them. Technically the game also throws up a few problems as well and while none of them are game-breaking they are still bothersome. At the end of the day then even though RIOT: Civil Unrest does have some unique ideas and mechanics in play, it just gets redundant too quickly. The game’s shortcomings It just fails to do enough to keep you coming back over and over, which is a shame because its core idea is pretty interesting. Take a shot if you'd like, it's priced ok and the concept is cool.
