Inspired by Franz Kafka, this great mix between weird fiction and magical realism casts you in the role of a man turned suddenly and inexplicably into a little bug and lets you explore a civilization built by insects but resembling our own. In many aspects Metamorphosis is crude, but the unsettling atmosphere of the strangely bureaucratic insect world, unusual music, solid voice-acting, and dialogues full of legal gibberish that illustrates said bureaucracy make the game unique.

Unconventional mixture of adventure and platformer is seasoned with a lot of true Kafka-like bizarreness, which makes Metamorphosis interesting especially for those who are familiar with the author's work.

Metamorphosis is a true homage to the works of Franz Kafka… but at the same time, it’s not a very good game. Try it out if you adore Kafka already, but everybody else should grab one of his books instead.

Video games have long trafficked in the absurd and impractical so why not extend the Kafkaesque to the medium that gave us the Mushroom Kingdom?

Overall, Metamorphosis does a tremendous job in bringing to life the atmosphere characteristic to the works of Kafka, toning somewhat down the depressive and trying to put some fun into it. It is an adventure which substitutes the drama with a more light-hearted, but still surreal self-discovery walkabout. But it feels more like a quite short interactive experience, rather than a videogame. Metamorphosis lacks variety and cohesive gameplay, focusing too much on the story and the atmosphere. As such even the current price may seem a bit high for this unusual game. It is a surreal experiment which despite its intriguing source material, will never become a classic due to its dull inner workings.

It turns out that Metamorphosis is a wonderful little adventure game that has you exploring a world you know but from an unknown perspective. It’s just a solid game about being a bug and how strange that is. You get to solve puzzles, climb walls, and try not to get squished a few times as well.

I would recommend the game, but with the caveat that it is only going to be for a certain sort of gamer. If you think you might be interested, give the demo a try and go from there. If it’s right up your alley though then prepare to have a standout interactive experience.

The puzzles in Metamorphosis usually involve finding the right area to be in, and the right object to manipulate. Only once or twice does Metamorphosis offer a puzzle with a clever solution, but the majority are as simple as finding out which way to move a gauge, or which button to press. There are some puzzles to be found in Metamorphosis but they’re typically very simple. For the most part, you’ll be using your legs to move contraptions backwards and forwards. There are a few more literal puzzles, but they’re extremely infrequent. The platforming is quite solid, though. The game’s most frequent challenge is that you’ll need to navigate the environment by carefully jumping on things to get around. These sections are certainly enjoyable, despite the game being in first-person.If you’re after a short platforming adventure with a story that will make you think just as much as the odd puzzle, you’d be wise to give Metamorphosis a try. It won't make you "Woooow this is it!" but it'll sure give you some good time on your Xbox One console.

There are a few things that could be polished to make it an even greater experience, but also a few that I think need changing completely, even though I enjoyed it quite a bit. If you're after a story that ends with deep thought and self-reflection, while maintaining fun game mechanics that seem inspired by many genres, then shrink down and enjoy the ride.

It’s a bold release that they took a chance on. For the most part, they executed it decently. I wish more developers took on something oddball like this, as it does provide a unique journey that most wouldn’t have dreamed could be translated.

Metamorphosis is a solidly made puzzle-platformer with a few adventure mechanics on the side for good measure. Taking a literary classic that some consider to be interminable and creating a lively and amusing game world from it, the devs at Ovid Works have create a deeply creative work that delivers a satisfyingly original experience.

I loved the world they created. I just wish there were more things to do inside the game, maybe secondary missions, or more things to discover while exploring, and also I would've liked that was longer. Either way, i think it's really enjoyable and fun.

I always love the idea of playing games through different perspectives, especially the perspective of bugs so I was excited to see all this game had to offer, and it initially starts out with tons of charm in its world building, but as the game goes on you see more of the same, the world and level design becomes more stale and boring, instead of being in the forground and filling me with wonder, it just became the background of this first person platformer, which is a real shame.. another massive let down for me was the story, it was confusing and the ending left much to be desired, by the end I had no idea what the goal even was anymore and why certain charatcers were in predicaments they were in and what all of this was even supposed to mean, so there sadly isn’t even a good story to make up for a majority of a game that feels pretty mediocre…That bein g said metamorphosis does offer a unique experience, especially in the beginning.. at times this game does a great job of making you feel like an annoyed human transformed into a bug trying to get his old life back, but most of the time youll find yourself pushing through sections hoping that initial magic comes back, and sadly it doesn’t.I give Metamorphosisa 6/10

Metamorphosis is a fun, ambitious, twisted and somewhat peculiar title inspired by the works of Kafka and offers something most games don’t – weirdness. Albeit suffering from some optimization issues, once fixed it will offer players a great game with some unbelievable moments to remember.

A lot of Kafka’s spirit shines through in this game with the illogical mixed with the depressingly truthful and real. It’s such a shame then that the Xbox One version is beset with so many technical hiccups that threaten to spoil the narrative. Like so much of Kafka’s work, Metamorphosis feels like it has been left unfinished and in need of a few more weeks of polishing.

Metamorphosis manages to whip up an impressive tribute to Franz Kafka in its quick story thanks to its offbeat sense of humor, style and eye-catching world. It’s just a shame that the game flounders when it comes to figuring out how merge together the various gameplay aspects needed to keep going in this tale of transformation. Still, it does have enjoyable platforming and a few surprises here and there, so if you have about three to four hours to kill, this is a crash course in abridged Kafka worth checking out.
