Sumptuously animated, Greak Memories of Azur draws you in with its high-end artwork. However, the game is an exercise in frustration and bad design choices. A central mechanic of three characters controlled by one player with no co-op option, hinders platforming and renders combat nigh on impossible. I’m out here trying to forget Azur.

Greak: Memories of Azur despite its strong points in the end fells short due to the flaws od the concept on which is based. The collaboration between the siblings is the worst part of the game, due to the severely lacking AI and the control system chosen by the developers. If you can get past that, you will find a charming game, that visually is a masterpiece. The puzzles and platforming elements may not be revolutionary, but they work well enough. The atmosphere of the game is undeniable, but it is affected by the combat that often feels unbalanced. If it would have given the option for couch or online co-op Greak: Memories of Azur would have been a true gem.

I’d seen Greak last year at PAX with an early-ish build and already there was no question that a great look was already established but in my time I was only able to see the potential in the character-swapping mechanics. I’m happy to say that on release the final version works nicely, still possessing a great simple-but-attractive look, smart puzzle elements with each character having their own feel and usefulness, and even relatively simple but satisfying platforming and combat to work as the connective tissue between everything. Le componenti di platforming e puzzle ambientali sono quindi ben pensate dalla Navegante, e integrate fluidamente nell’esperienza di gioco.Le bossfight sono svolte da tutti e tre i personaggi contemporaneamente, ma se il micromanagement risulta tedioso durante le battaglie più complesse, gli sviluppatori hanno aggiunto la possibilità di rendere invulnerabili i personaggi che non sono sotto il controllo diretto del giocatore, in modo da evitare sconfitte di natura puramente meccanica. The lack of a detailed map, even for areas you’ve already visited, makes navigation more frustrating than fun until you eventually stumble back on the intended route. The only short comings of the game are the lack of situational music and ambient background noise. This didn’t dampen my spirits too much however as the core gameplay and story had me too immersed to miss it very much. Just that the experience would have been complete with just a little more icing on the cake. Greak is a fairly affordable game on Steam also, so if you’re in the market for a game like Ori without the price tag before sales. Pickup Greak, it’s a wonderfully cute game perfect for winding down after work or ignoring the stresses of Covid lockdowns.

It's a shame that for how great Greak: Memories of Azur looks and sounds, it’s brought way down by its artificial difficulty from its poor escort controls and mechanics. I should want to play more the further I get into a game’s world, but instead the longer it went on, the less I was enjoying it, simply wanting it to be over due to its controls. Controlling multiple characters is much more frustrating than it should be, especially given how stunning its visuals are. I wanted to love Greak: Memories of Azur on its gorgeous aesthetic alone, but find it hard to recommend at its current price point due to having to constantly babysit multiple characters for a ten hour playthrough.

Greak will probably caught your attention thanks to its beautiful aesthetic, but it will soon show the signs of a design approach that just don’t fit its rigidly single player nature. Inventory capacity is very low. In general, the variety of items in the game is less. Most of the time, we don't even use the skills we learned. Cooking is good but variety is less. Quests are few. I would like more side quests. The story presentation is good, but it's too short and doesn't satisfy the ending. I would love to see a good boss fight at the end. But still it was a good game. I hope the game continues with sequel.

Greak: Memories of Azure has a gorgeous presentation and world to discover, but the added features, although unique, require a specific type of adventure fan to enjoy. Things just become overly confusing, and my muscle memory never seemed to adapt to the constant demand for accessing the menu and switching between characters. By himself, Greak feels like a dull carbon copy of so many protagonists from recent action-exploration games, namely Hollow Knight. Having Adara and Raydel eventually accompany him, so that you’re simultaneously controlling three characters, adds a superficially more creative, if awkward, layer to the game, a multi-character gimmick that Greak never fully utilizes. But the puzzles tend toward the rote, as in one character needing to hold down a pressure plate or crank open a door to facilitate the path forward for everyone in the group.

Short, but unique and satisfying despite some frustrating elements, Greak: Memories of Azur is a winning actiony puzzle-platformer with some of the best 2D visuals you can find.
