While the changes originally come from the Japanese exclusive Zodiac Job System, which released in Japan back in 2007, the revamp never made it's way oversees, meaning the system is brand new to fans of the original in the west.While the game allows players to relive the same story as the original, the new elements add for a degree of specialisation, and character diversity that was sorely lacking in the original release. Now there is a need to think about how you want your characters to grow, experiment with different equipment and "jobs" (think "class"), and approach party building in a way that plays into individual strengths, rather than just building a team of OP everymen, dumping all your top level gear on them and calling it a day.Graphically its a massive upgrade from the PS2, little surprise, but it allows the world (which tbf had been impressive by PS2 standards) to really pop.

To add insult to that you dont even need to select your actions, the game can literally play itself, and the amount of mandatory grinding is insane.Playing this is a completely joyless experience, only meant for the dullest of people.

This is one of the best FF games in my opinion though I didn't play all of them but this one has so many good things except its story.

On a scale of best to worst Final Fantasy titles, XII sits somewhere in the middle. It exists in a bland limbo of mediocrity. The best qualities lie in its art direction, music and animation. Being able to play with a high speed mode truly illustrates just how slow and tedious the combat actually is and by circumventing it entirely, a huge portion of the experience is compromised but also the overall product is made more enjoyable.

Both of which were strong in story and gameplay, and FFXII is no exception.Everything here is a shining example of what made the FInal Fantasy series great. The creatures, lore, lands, story, characters, music, combat and magic were what made the series so captivating. The Zodiac Age does this ALMOST to perfection.The only drawbacks I noticed were:A) The Gambit system, once mastered made combat dull and uninteresting. Save for when the real fights came along and it was time to adapt my strategy, did it feel exciting again.B) The new job system really doesn't change all that much and could have been so much more. By the time you are 60 percent through the game, EVERYTHING WILL BE MAXED OUT except levels. The jobs do not feel unique and mostly change depending on if your a magic user or a attacker.Hell , just having some costumes changes would've made things interesting. Which is nothing in comparison to FFV.C) Late game leveling can be a big grind.Otherwise, I believe FFXII is my top ten Final Fantasy games after completing it.

Final Fantasy XII is a solid entry in the main series that has definitely been improved by updates made with the remaster. Elements of the game that were quite a shake-up at the time stand out much less given where the series has gone over the last decade. If you missed it the first time, this is the best version I could recommend thanks to the portability and all of the most up to date additions and improvements. More importantly, the game is fun. After countless hours of turn-based battles, it was a pleasant change. If you missed it the first time, it’s time to fix that mistake and grab Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age.

Despite it all, I'd still say Final Fantasy XII is a good game. Its combat is almost entirely automated, but it's designed by you thanks to the programmable Gambit system, while character progression through the job system is deep and open to creativity. Running up to enemies and having the AI fight your battles for you may not sound great, but it is absolutely is. I'd be happy to play another forty hours, but preferably without any more story.

The Spring of 2019 has been a wonderful stroll down memory lane of Square Enix glory, and Final Fantasy XII is the high note it ends on. Featuring every quality-of-life improvement to date, and the ability to play in handheld or on a television at a moment’s notice, it’s an easy decision to call the Switch version the definitive experience. Final Fantasy XII may end up being the best of the franchise on Switch, but with so many titles still available, hopefully it won’t be the last.

With the enhancements and ability to play anywhere, The Zodiac Age on the Switch is everything I wanted from a portable release. It was obviously not feasible to have this on Vita but I’m glad Square Enix put this on a portable because the gameplay perfectly suits portable play and it is the full game with even more features than the PC version that was already a step above the PS4 version. I know its unlikely but the only thing I’d want more from this version is the ability to sync my save with Xbox One since I have that version as well.

Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age is great. It was great in 2017 on the PS4. It’s greater now on the Switch. It looks amazing and the frame rate is consistent in the dock and in handheld. The price point is an issue. A port of a game more than a decade old should not cost the same as a full price Triple A new release title. There are indie games on the Nintendo Shop that are amazing for only a fraction of the price. Hell the original PS4 version of the Zodiac Age can be found in most stores of $25 and it is ostensibly the same game. If you can find a copy on sale, it is an essential title to add to your Switch library.

With so much to do in the story, without trying to complete the Hunts and side missions, I can have no hesitation in recommending this game to RPG fans.

I've loved Final Fantasy XII ever since it originally launched on PS2, but the additions of autosave and map-overlay features were highly appreciated and definitely long overdue. It may be a remaster of a decade old game, but it's a welcomed and well done remaster for Xbox Gamers. Finally, after 14 years, Final Fantasy XII is officially playable on the Xbox One family of consoles. Changes such as adding the OST-quality soundtrack option and allowing for New Game + from the start are noteworthy, but not really earth-shaking. Zodiac Age’s Xbox port also adds “cheat” options in the in-game menu for infinite license points or gil. These are definitely nice options to have and pair well with New Game + if you’re looking for more of a casual or quick run through of the game. Final Fantasy XII's Xbox version is a good port of an excellent game. It's not remarkably different from the original version of the game, but it's remarkably faithful and relatively bug free. It's still a Playstation 2 game at its core, and no amount of cranked up anti-aliasing or fleshing out, but it's still a visually distinct game with great art direction and a stunning localization. I'd highly recommend Xbox Final Fantasy fans check out this remaster of a great classic from Square Enix.

His approach to open world by giving large but varied areas while still feeling like you are making progress is the kind of great feeling that follows you throughout the game.The new gameplay changes allows you to have characters who can fill roles that pushes you to level all of them, and the exclusive features such as the ability to reset jobs instead of being locked to one through the whole game makes experimentation easy and enjoyable. For people with not enough time on their hands, the fast-forward feature allows you to make great amounts of progress even on limited time. It was also highly revolutionary with its gambit system, which still is even today one of the few games that made basic programming enjoyable and intuitive as a visual programming language. I have teached kids how to understand programming concepts with this game. This system allows you to program your party members to do actions for you. in short, you are designing their AI by yourself and it works very well, in a very pedagogic manner.The story is also a greatly overlooked one, as it follows Matsuno's flavour of political stories that manages to bring out the humanness in people. It's not so much about good or bad people than it is about the environment they live in and the set of beliefs they have. It's the closest you have to a palatable, Game of Thrones-esque storyline in Final Fantasy alongside Tactics. Not to mention the excellent Sakimoto soundtrack re-orchestrated into rousing arrangements, and the stellar VA cast including class A voice actors such as Gideon Emery, Simon Templeman (Kain!) and Nolan North among many others.For people who wants an engrossing experience while witnessing an adult storyline that has few of the anime, shonen-bound trappings but a lot of the western literary references (Shakespeare, Dickens among others) in mind, there is no doubt that it is the best Final Fantasy experience you can have on your switch right now.

Fans of the original adventure will probably love it, and fans of the series who never played it should give it a try, but on its own two legs in the present day, it doesn't offer much that other RPGs don't do while looking and feeling much better in today's technological landscape.

Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age is not only a great remaster, but a massive improvement to an already excellent game. The story is engrossing, the characters really grow on you, and it’s an epic RPG that both doesn’t feel the least bit grind-y and won’t waste your time. The Job System is just perfect and is a minigame in its own right. Finally, the big Star Wars influence makes FF12 feel like Knights of the Old Republic 3 – and that thought kept me going until the end. I can’t believe I had to wait 12 years for this game, but at least it was worth the wait.

An excellent remaster of one of the most underestimated episodes of the series released at the dawn of old-gen consoles. Veterans will appreciate the number of new features and newcomers can taste this great Japanese RPG with beautiful visuals.

The Zodiac Age is mostly a triumph. The few issues that do exist aren’t enough to detract from the overall quality of the underlying game, and most of the updates, upgrades and tweaks really work in the game’s favor.

This might be the best RPG 2017 has to offer. The Gambit system and the MMO-like fights are very modern and the rest of Final Fantasy 12 is still a joy to play.

Final Fantasy XII was outdone by the competition when it came out eleven years ago, and The Zodiac Age changes absolutely nothing in that regard. An overpriced and undercooked re-release of a game better left forgotten.

I'm a long time fan and I've played every main entry and several of the spinoffs. This is the game i'm most bitter about though. It was the first (non-online) main entry after sakaguchi left and that really shows in the story.This time there's no real main character and with the exception of Basch and Balthier the cast doesn't have much personality. Instead the main focus is on the events of the kingdom of Ivalice. The story is much more political and scenes which advance the story are few and far between. You can go quite a few hours without any further motivation to continue your quest.The combat system is probably one of the best parts of the game, I preferred the traditional turn based approach but final fantasy has always taken risks in introducing new gameplay elements and I appreciate that.One of the biggest issues is how dull the environments are. Several areas are just copy and paste. You'll find the same features being reused frequently and so most places lack any real character. This can make the game drag quite a bit.Finally, the main villain is very forgettable. He certainly won't top any lists of fan favorite enemies in the series. The ending is quite enjoyable but it didn't really make my 60 hours feel worthwhile.I'm sure many missed out on this game during it's original release. It came out towards the end of the ps2's lifecycle after all. So i'm sure that many (myself included) were tempted by a second chance to play it but I couldn't recommend it. It's very long and it hasn't aged well. If you're already a fan then i'm sure you'll enjoy the re release but for most new players it'll likely disappoint them. I'd recommend checking out one of the older releases in the series or picking up 15. Final fantasy 2 and 12 are pretty much the only ones I'd say are a waste of time.

Put aside any misconceptions you may have about the idea of re-selling old games in shinier coats, this is no lazy rehash and it was always a dang fine game to boot!
